During this series I asked my sitters to bring a book or watch a film, so they would have something to be absorbed in, changing their expression from "I'm being watched" to one that is hovering between "being seen" and "being lost". The patchwork backgrounds with texture and pattern peeking through were fun to explore technically, but also provide a visual context - a physical background standing in for the variety of sub-surface experiences that shape us.
